CHROMES- THESIA

"CHROMESTHESIA" is an improvised live painting-composition performance that I created using a paintbrush instrument that I designed and fabricated using Arduino and Ableton Live. This was my final project for Designing Interfaces for Live Performance at NYU Interactive Media Arts with David Rios.

"CHROMESTHESIA" is an improvised live performance, showcasing a custom-designed paintbrush instrument crafted during participation in David Rios's Designing Interfaces for Live Performance class at NYU Interactive Media Arts. This unique instrument translates colors into sound, facilitating the creation of a dynamic, live improvised painting-composition. As the musical intensity escalates, the brushstrokes and movements synchronize with the rhythmic elements, establishing a captivating creative feedback loop between the artist and the music.

The word, chromesthesia, refers to a type of synesthesia in which sound involuntarily evokes an experience of colour, shape or movement. This instrument was inspired by the British-Irish artist and cyborg, Neil Harbisson. The piece is meant to be simultaneously a live composition and a live painting performance.

Materials/Software Used: Arduino Nano 33 IoT, Adafruit’s RGB Color Sensor TCS34725, Ableton Live
